He stood aghast at the monster withering in the ocean before him! It was unbelievable! Phileas looked out from the deck of the Nautilus to see a mass of clinging muscle wrapping around the ship. The creature’s color had changed to an angry red since coming to the surface. At first sight in the depths of the sea, he had thought it a marvelous predator. Its movements had been as fluid as the ocean it had moved in. There had been a strength and power in the Leviathan that he could respect and give tribute to. But then it had turned from its parallel course and attacked the ship, spreading its many arms wide to draw its prey into the clutches of the sharp hard beak at its center.
It was definitely trying to drag the vessel back down into depths more comfortable for itself, he assessed. To eat us at its leisure? That isn’t going to happen, he then determined, and directed that thought toward this previously thought mythical enemy. Phileas looked around himself at the men flowing from the ships hatch with harpoons. He grabbed the arm of a seaman carrying several and took possession of one.
