He blinked. Then he blinked again. Then he closed his eyes and counted to five before opening them again. It didn’t help. The creature was still there just under the surface of the ocean staring at him with its single massive green eye. He then leaned over the rail of the Aurora to get a closer look. It was like a cuddle fish, only a very very large cousin to the ones he made such fine meals of on occasion. It was easily as long as the Aurora’s gondola. It seemed to be a glowing grayish green in the water, unperturbed about the dirigible floating above the surface of the ocean. “Perhaps great sea monster coming to surface to get better look at us,” he considered as he calculated the length of its massive floating tentacles against the height the Aurora was presently being held at and wondered if the creature might think to reach up and touch his Aurora in curiosity. And perhaps Passepartout could be catching great sea monster with grappling hook? Could Aurora’s engines pull such a large fishy out of the ocean? Would Passepartout become famous for capturing great sea monster? But then again . . . What spices would it take to cook sea beast and how thin will I have to slice tentacles to make edible steaks?” he considered with a smile. “Have to do something with great sea monster after showing it off.”
Apparently the great sea creature caught his train of thought and didn’t like it. It flexed its many legs and then disappeared into the deep. The smile fell from the Frenchman’s face. “Now we never knowing,” he said to the Aurora as he patted her rail.
