Phileas looked over his repertoire for the day. Another repeat performance. He liked repeat performances, even if some of them were personally painful in one way or another. He had shuddered to see that he would be doing Mind Matters again, and Echoes of the Vampire in close succession. “Lord, do they think I’m made of iron?”

But then, he had had some comedy to do recently as well. Promommy’s little ditti for April fool’s day had been fun, and holding his composure through Vita’s lovely April joke had been a trial. Luckily, the lady had written him an out in the end, but holding back that long had been so so hard.

Jules walked into the parlor on the Aurora where Phileas had been going over his lines for Dreams and Visions. He had a smile on his face. It wasn’t often he got to one up the Foggs, but thanks to nice Ladyaine, he had been given him the chance. His puppy was trailing him as he approached Fogg. She was a cute little thing, and he had not been able to leave her in the prop room when that one had ended. Since then he had gone through his drama by Deri. That one he loved to do. Being a prisoner of the League was old hat, but being the prisoner of a young woman who had designs on him personally, evil or not, was novel. Thank all the muses that no one had thought to ask for that unfinished piece where the League had been more forceful in that pursuit. But that was on another board, wasn’t it.

He had been doing other meaty pieces of late too. Working under cover in Ireland with the guest performer, David Fogg had been fun. ‘Verne, Jules Verne, the secret agent,’ he thought to himself laughing. ‘Bond, eat your heart out.’

Rebecca came down from her room in full costume for her appearance in Dreams and Visions. “Did I have a major part in this one,” she asked? “It’s been so long since I have seen the script.” She was still a bit distracted by having those very full parts Nice Oden had her doing with Count Rimini. She did so love working with Angelo, and that last one was such a bittersweet thing in the end.

“Oh do stop floating on your romantic high and read the script Rebecca,” Phileas said testily. Vicci’s stories can be demanding. You must not be caught off your game. Phileas was so glad to see those vampire stories over and done with. That immortal hack took great delight in upstaging him, and did it constantly.

“Master is right,” Passepartout reiterated, coming out of the kitchen with a tray for teatime. As he poured for everyone, he thought back on his past parts as well. His most interesting moment in the most recent ones had been getting a mind screw implanted and going into a dreamscape. He had loved the way nice Deri had shown his inner mind. Of course, there had also been his moment with the two fops at the Miner’s Arms. Oh yes, he liked being the defender of France’s reputation abroad in that. He had not cared for getting drenched twice, or was it three times. But no matter, Miss Vicci’s story was coming up now and he had to be ready. “Is my script in that stack?”

“Right here,” Arago said holding it out for him.

“What are you doing here?” Rebecca said in surprise. The man hadn’t been sitting there when she had come down.

Phileas, who had been studying the script, didn’t take exception to the man’s sudden appearance. This was his chance to shine. “So good of you to drop in Arago,” he said in greeting. “Do make yourself comfortable.”

“Does one good to be featured in such a good script,” Arago said looking over his lines. “I get so few appearances.”

And so they sat, studying their next part, savoring the familiar lines. As long as such wonderful lady’s and gentlemen remembered them. They would stay busy indefinitely.

The end.
